How to handle a crying preschooler in school:
When a child is crying they are trying to tell you something. Many times they do not have the words to express the emotion they are feeling and therefore cry.
When a child is afraid, scared or overwhelmed many will cry.
It is important to note that you should never tellĀ child to stop crying. A child is feeling something and that is why they are crying. Just like you do not tell a child not to be sad or angry you cannot tell a child not to cry. It is something a young child cannot control.
How to help a crying child in school:
Have the child bring in something from home to help ease his/her pain, such as a blanket or stuffed toy
Acknowledge the child’s feelings and then try to redirect them to something else.
Get children excited about school and activities that will be done.
Suggest parents to bring their child in earlier if possible, this helps that the child should not feel overwhelmed.
Allow parents to stay awhile in the classroom to help the child feel at ease.
Send/ share with families books related to school.
Sometimes it is helpful to acknowledge the child, talk to them and allow them to settle down without you hovering over them. Let them know you are there for them and check in with them every few minutes.
Every child responds differently to the first few days of school, crying does not necessarily indicate maturity or lack thereof. Transitions are typically difficult for children. showing children you are there for them and care helps them settle down faster and begin the journey of learning and discovery.
